Take Notes Ft. Astonish & Kenlo Key (Prod. Dynamic) is Esohel's 3rd leak off the upcoming album "Essential", which will be dropping on 7/12/11. We chopped it up about the motivation behind his career...
BFM: Start from the beginning, what circumstances in you past made you the dope artist you are today?
Esohel: I was first motivated to write lyrics from actually decyphering those of other artists and breaking their words down on the sheet of paper growing an appreciation for the artform. I started writing my own lyrics around the age of 12, but like most artist starting off, most of what i wrote was a learning experience and nothing i wanted to let the public hear. So after a couple years of workin on the craft i started laying down my first full album titled "Eclipse" with all the production contributed by DJ Poor. Hustling cds from my highschool locker and gaining recognition allowed me to step on stages from talent shows across the city to the performing in front of thousands at the McCormick Place.
These circumstances all stemmed from the work ethic invested in the music and the advice i would tell other artists striving to be a "Dope Artist" is to stay consistant and true to your art. Always put out quality music and never settle for less.
BFM: How did UdotFam group all link up?
Esohel: U Dot Fam originated as The UI Family back in 1999 and consisted of several artists along with the current line up of 2Tymin, PLA, Cast, DJ Poor, and Myself. We all went to Lane Tech Highschool, except for Cast who was a supporter at first and DJ Poor who is my older brother and partner of the independent lable Under Investigation Records. The other artist that originally were part of the group split ways mainly for creative diffrences and also motivated the current group name of U Dot Fam as a sort of abbreviation of what was. To this day we stay strong and united by the common goal to create hot music for the public.
BFM: I'll be attending that SubT show Wed. July 6th that showcases Esohel alongside other great Chi-Mcs such as Visual, Jamal Science, Sceme DJ Tiff-NY. What other Chicago artist other than yourself do you really listen to on the music tip?
Esohel: In all honesty, I haven't been keeping up with most of the music coming out from mainstream artist since most of my time is dedicated to creating music of my own. I do keep an eye out for the independent artists grinding trying to put Chicago on the map but since there is so many with quality music out its hard to name them all. All I know is that its only a matter of time before our names become household ones because you can't deny hard work and talent.
BFM: What's the latest project to look for & how do we cop that?
Esohel: I just finished up the "Essential" album which features guest appearances by U Dot Fam, Astonish (Molemen Records), Kenlo Key (Tha Intavention), Voyce G.I. Go, Visual, Natalie Oliveri plus more, along with production from Wes P, Dynamic, J-Rell, Serious, and Anton Genius. This 18 track project will be available for free download 7/12/11 over at UDotFam.com.

Project Mayhem recently flexed their lyrical muscle, strangling a Rick Ross remix on, "Number 1 Headband". I caught up with Project Mayhem's frontman Lennon to chop it up about their latest project & "Night of Mayhem" going down this Monday at The Shrine. Check it out....
BFM: So how did Project Mayhem Music start & come to flourish into this huge movement that it is today?
LENNON: Project Mayhem is flourishing through hard work and dedication!!!! Also by keeping the ideas fresh and different within the group.
BFM: You are the CEO & a dope artist on the label, how do you balance both out so well wearing so many hats?
LENNON: It's hard wearing both hat because it takes away from me being able to go 100 percent into artist mode and wild out, I have to be on top of so many other things; marketing, management etc...
BFM: Project Mayhem has a huge show at the Shrine this Monday June 27th called "Night of Mayhem". What is the statement you want to leave everybody with when you step off the stage?
LENNON: We want everyone to understand that Mayhem is a machine not just a group. Paypa , Ish, Lennon and Tree are all solo artist that can hold their own as MCs! So when you come to the show you will see a Lennon show an Ish show etc...

From Toronto, positioned himself as one of Canada’s hottest up-and-coming musical exports, Shaun’s biography series pays tribute to the lives of cultural icons through hip-hop. KFDC: I'm from the Humboldt Park area. I been there my whole life.
BFM: Would you like to comment on the violence going on over in West Humboldt last week?
KFDC: That's exactly the shit I'm talking about. You hear about gang violence so often on the news that its pretty much normal. I didn't know the victim (Jovany Diaz) personally but a lot of people on my FB newsfeed did and the pain of those people was easily felt through a simple Facebook status. The fact that he was only 15 is fucking scary to me because I have two teenage brothers that live in this area. It never ends. You already know somebody's gonna get theirs. Its a circle. How do u stop a circle of retaliation??
BFM: What's the project you're working on now. Can you put everybody up on what's the whole concept around the project?
KFDC: Right now, I'm working on the video for my single "Grindin Like Daaaamn" which will feature my cameraman and a few others on the team. Basically, the concept of "Grindin Like Daaaamn" revolves around an educated, young hustler going about his day. While he is being surveilled by detectives, he acts on his instincts, dodging the detectives on their endless pursuit, that is, until they catch up with him................
BFM: What are you working on right now, what are your big plans for the future?
KFDC: At the moment, I'm just working on creating a buzz over the coming summer. I've gotten a lot of positive feedback for the music I been putting out recently. I feel like I'm finally settling in within myself as an artist. There's so many aspects of what I do and the work is never ending. From creating a beat, to writing the lyrics, to producing the video; it keeps your mind at work 24/7. and I love it. Some of my current goals are to start doing shows and putting out more music. As for big plans... I just wanna be one of the dopest.
BFM: What are some things you love or hate about the Chicago Hip-hop scene right now?
KFDC: I think Chicago niggaz got a lot to offer when it comes to hip hop. Just through browsing Chi-Bangerz, I was put up on some DOPE ass niggaz that I never knew existed such as them UDOTfam niggaz. Now I'm bangin they shit heavy lol. Its all about originality to me. There are lyricists in Chicago that put creativity and thought into their music and get no love. There's a lot more to Chicago hip hop than money, drugs, bitches and guns. Its a normal part of life for anybody that lives and knows their own hood, but its not the only aspect of life and i just think we need to explore and touch more on the real life shit instead of actin like this hood shit is the way to live, cuz from first hand experience, its really not.
BFM: Where can we get our hands on your music and where can they see you live in person next?
"ChicagoHip Hop artist's Sincerely Yours and Trinity as well as North Side producer Phantem form The Trilogy. The two Mc’s have their own unique styles that ironically compliment each other in a way that no other male/female tandem has been able to accomplish. Each Mc definitely has their own style and the merger of the two combined with Phantem's gritty beats makes them the perfect coalition. The new track His & Hers is the worlds first introduction of this unique Chicago alliance. But don’t let the song title fool you, His & Hers is definitely not a typical love song..unless it’s a love for true Hip Hop."
Listen to my nigga Jay Fate act a fool on these 3 tracks. On "Money, Weed, Pussy" he comically describes his current lifestyle & motivation in this world. "Water Street Lush" is a rock inspired party banger & " StripClub" is an anthem for all the niggas, like myself, who be at them strippers after they get off work! lol Facebook.com/JayFate
This is real hiphop. A love song about being a recording, touring & performing artist set over a dope 60's doo wop soundtrack. This is what music should sound like! facebook.com/billacamp
